Deveena’s Climate Story #1
Name
Deveena Derick
Place
Kerala, India
How are you sensing climate change?
I woke up on a midsummer day on August 16th, 2018, thinking it’d be just like any other rainy day. But little did I know, I would come to find out that my entire home state Kerala was flooded, and the flood didn’t only ruin my childhood home, but had also taken the lives of my friends and family friends back home. I always disliked the rain but even so, I never thought that it would be the reason I’d have to say bye to them and my loving home so soon. The devastating flood occurred because the rainwater was 116% higher than it normally was. Kerala and other areas in smaller countries are losing more than what scarce they have because of climate change. We don’t take care of Earth, and millions of innocent people are being affected by it. I used to think climate change didn’t matter. This was careless of me. People I knew my whole life were gone because of climate change and its severe effects and impacts on the environment. I didn’t even get the chance to speak to them one last time.
How do these changes make you feel?
I feel hopeless and afraid. Afraid of what will happen to us in the future. Will I lose even more people I cherish because of climate change? Will we even be here? Will climate change ever be saved?
